Elements of Communication

The communication process involves the following key elements:

  1. Sender - the person initiating the communication
  2. Message - the information or content being communicated
  3. Encoding - converting the message into a format that can be transmitted
  4. Channels of Communication - the medium through which the message is transmitted
  5. Receiver - the intended recipient of the message
  6. Decoding - interpreting the received message
  7. Interpretation - understanding the meaning of the message
  8. Feedback - the response from the receiver to the sender
  9. Environment - the context and atmosphere in which communication occurs

Features of Communication

  1. Two way process - involves interaction between sender and receiver
  2. Information sharing and understanding - both parties share and comprehend information
  3. Circular flow - communication moves in a continuous cycle
  4. Verbal and non-verbal - includes spoken words and body language
  5. Goal oriented - communication has specific objectives
  6. Continuous process - an ongoing activity in organizations
  7. Pervasive - present in all aspects of business activities
